April 2022 Meeting Notice: Charlie Van Dongen – From loudspeakers to listeners – On-site Listening Session

We are finally meeting in person again!

The first in-person meeting of the AES Melbourne Section (in what seems like forever) will be held on
Monday 11th April 2022 at 7:30pm.

*Note – there will be NO live online element to this meeting.

Charlie Van Dongen, of Involve Audio will host us at his Mentone (Vic) manufacturing facility, revisiting his earlier presentation with a practical demonstration of:

Part 2 – Listening

In the earlier session in February 2021 Charlie Van Dongen of Involve Audio, based in Melbourne, Australia described this end-to-end sound reproduction chain extending from the latest generation of loudspeaker transducers through amplifiers and render electronics that have been developed based on just how humans perceive sound.

Meeting Report: February 2022 – AES75 “Measuring Loudspeaker Maximum Linear Sound Levels Using Noise”

On Monday February 14th the AES Melbourne Section turned to Zoom again for yet another online meeting.

Over thirty members and guests joined the meeting to hear Meyer Sound’s Merlijn Van Veen Chair of AES Task Group SC-04-03-A present on the current revision of the AES75 Standard “Measuring Loudspeaker Maximum Linear Sound Levels Using Noise”

After welcoming everyone, Section Chair Graeme Huon introduced Merlijn who started by explaining the work of the Standards workgroup tasked with developing this standard, noting that the Task Group consisted of more than 70 people from a wide range of related organizations who had met fortnightly for 2 years to thrash out this document.  He went on to explain the genesis of the M-Noise signal within the Meyer Sound company, and its journey to consideration for inclusion in an AES Standard.

February 2022 Meeting Notice: Merlijn Van Veen – AES75 – AES standard for loudspeaker measurement

The next online meeting of the AES Melbourne Section will be on Monday 14th February 2022 at 7:30pm AEDT (UTC+11).

Merlijn Van Veen, Chair of the AES Standards Task Group SC-04-03-A and Senior Technical Support & Education Specialist at Meyer Sound will present on the topic of:

AES75: AES standard for acoustics  
Measuring loudspeaker maximum linear sound levels using noise

Merlijn will briefly explore the background and impetus for this project. The AES Standards procedure will be explained and demonstrated, including challenges faced by the SC-04-03-A Task Group and how the Group’s activities have inspired development within other standard bodies. The session will close with a description of the remaining development steps.

Meeting Report: December 2021 – Loudspeaker Power Ratings – Michail Barabasz

On Monday December 13th the AES Melbourne Section mounted yet another Zoom online meeting.

Over thirty members and guests joined the meeting to hear Michail Barabasz of Lorantz Audio Services present on the topic of Loudspeaker Power Ratings

After welcoming everyone, Section Chair Graeme Huon introduced Michail who started his presentation with a brief history of his career at Plessey Rola (pre-1975), including and his involvement with the 1977 Australian Standard for Sound System Equipment (AS1127, Part 5 – Loudspeakers), before establishing Lorantz Audio Services in 1976.

Meeting Report: October 2021 – From Stradivarius to Speaker – Joe Hayes

On Monday October 11th the AES Melbourne Section mounted another Zoom online meeting, due to Victoria’s continuing and now world record-breaking pandemic lockdown situation.

Over thirty members and guests joined the meeting to hear Inventor and Vastigo Ltd CTO, Joe Hayes speak on his DaS AuReality loudspeaker technology in a presentation entitled:

From Stradivarius to Speakertechnology for improvements in sound delivery and room acoustics treatment”

The DaS AuReality system claims to reduce the impact of room acoustics for the listening experience and produce a listening experience free of sweet spot limitations by using an algorithm to create Diffusion at the Source (DaS))
