Dr Albert Neville Thiele (4 December-1920 – 1 October-2012)

Neville Thiele, a former Vice President International of the AES, has died in Sydney, Australia, at the age of 91.

A Queenslander by birth, Neville was a friend to all who knew him, within the AES and outside, a great scholar, a fine engineer, a bushwalker and a man of peace.

“Born within the smell of the Castlemaine Four-X Brewery” as Neville cheerfully told everyone, he spent his childhood in the city of Brisbane, and its suburbs. His father, a qualified pharmacist, taught Neville and his brother Leonard core elements of confidence through his own passion for singing and poetry recital.

Meeting Report … Intro to Architectural Acoustics … October 2012

On Mon Oct 8th AES Member Dr Rodney Staples presented to a group of twenty-six members and visitors on the topic “An Introduction to Architectural Acoustics.”

This was a non-mathematical, undergraduate-level presentation – designed to provide the listener with a basic overview of the topic.
The Section has two follow-up meetings planned on acoustics topics – studio design with designer Peter Brown in November, and concert hall renovation (Hamer Hall) with Peter Exton of Marshall Day Acoustics early next year.
This session was designed as a basic primer to provide a better understanding of the topic and add to the appreciation of the future presentations.

 Studio  Acoustics and Design

Presented by Peter Brown.

The next Meeting of the Melbourne Section of the AES will be held on Monday November 12th 2012 at 7:30pm at Swinburne University (room number to be advised shortly), and will feature renowned studio designer Peter Brown.

Following on from October’s presentation on the theories underpinning the practice of acoustic design, this month Peter Brown will take the conversation in a practical direction, with examples of his work – which will inevitably demonstrate the use of typical acoustic devices in real-world studios.

Architect and Studio Designer Peter Brown has been involved in studio acoustic and functional design for over thirty years, building and/or upgrading many of the foremost music studios in the country – such as Armstrong Studios, AAV, Metropolis, Alberts (Sydney), Soundfirm, Rhinoceros (Sydney),  Song Zu and Trackdown at Fox Studios (Sydney). His latest music studio project, recently completed is Ginger Studios in Cremorne Vic. Continue reading “Meeting Notice – November 12th”
